Tatsuya Nakatani w/ special guest Grant Evans

November 25th 7-9PM $10 suggested donation, Refreshments provided.

Trio Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to be hosting an evening of lecture and performance with Tatsuya Nakatani (w/ special guest Grant Evans). Nakatani is a Japanese avant garde percussionist and acoustic sound artist. Based in the United States, he has released over 80 recordings in the last two decades and tours extensively.

Nakatani has developed his own unique instrumentation, creating new sounds and extended techniques. Utilizing gongs, drums, cymbals, singing bowls, his breath, wooden sticks, metal objects, and the idiosyncratic bows and mallets he handcrafts in his workshop; he sculpts an intense, intuitively primitive, expressive sound form that defies genre. His work engages improvised-experimental music and movement, while still retaining the traditional sense of space, depth and deep time found in Japanese art.

The Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) is a mobile community engagement project he has developed and grown over the last decade. Nakatani organizes and conducts local ensembles in performances of his complex harmonic compositions on 15 bowed gongs. These works are site specific by nature, taking place in abandoned grain silos, viaducts and other unique architectural spaces as well as in traditional concert halls and galleries.

Nakatani teaches master classes and workshops at universities, giving students an opportunity to share his unique approach and philosophy for creating visceral, non-linear, experiential sounds.

Grant Evans is an audio/visual artist working primarily with electronics, acoustic instruments, field recordings, and magnetic tape.

"... I would characterize the sounds Grant Evans generates as being closer to mud and muck as far as tactile metaphors go. It is sticky, gritty, and at times ugly sounding, but that is exactly what makes it compelling. I have no idea how he made these sounds, since almost nothing is identifiable, but I am rather glad that he did." - brainwashed.com

Screening: Bad Girl Dracula + More!

  • 766 West Broad Street Athens, GA, 30601 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Trio Contemporary Art Gallery will present a special 3D screening of “Bad Girl Dracula,” the latest movie by long-running Athens underground film collective Gonzoriffic, on Saturday, December 9th, 2017 at 8pm. “The Werewolf Turned into a Person” and “Dr. Humpinstein’s Erotik Castle” will also be shown, followed by an informal Q&A with the filmmakers.

Filmed in September 2017 at Trio Gallery, “Bad Girl Dracula” is a camped up interpretation of ‘70s lesbian vampire movies by Jess Franco, with a primary cast that includes Dee Flowered and Tittiana Sprinkles of the Athens burlesque troupe Effie’s Club Follies and Atlanta visual artist and performer Thio Rose.

“The Werewolf Turned into a Person” left viewers stunned at last month’s Gonzoriffic Underground Movie Show at Ciné. The bizarre short stars Dee Flowered and Addison Nikki and incorporates dialogue taken from real conversations with director Andrew Shearer’s 4 year old child as well as some unique GoPro footage shot outside Atlanta’s Monsterama convention.

“Dr. Humpinstein’s Erotik Castle” is a feminist take on the B movie styles of Ed Wood and Russ Meyer, using the structure of the cult classic “Orgy of the Dead” to make a statement about body positivity. It was made in and around Athens in 2011 and features an old school girl gang rumble filmed at the concrete plant outside the Chase Street warehouses.

The program runs 60 minutes and is unrated. A $5 donation is suggested.

About Gonzoriffic:

Several of their shorts and features are available through Amazon Video Direct and Amazon Prime streaming services.

Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai
“Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it”
Directed by Christopher Kirkley
In collaboration with Mdou Moctar and Jerome Fino

A revolutionary story of one musicians struggle to make it, against all odds, in the winner takes all Tuareg guitar scene of Niger.

THEN see Mdou Moctar LIVE! on The Rooftop at Georgia Theatre!
https://www.facebook.com/events/424323821298366/

FILM SYNOPSIS:
Akounak tells the universal story of a musician trying to make it against all odds, set against the backdrop of the raucous subculture of Tuareg guitar. The protagonist, real life musician Mdou Moctar, must battle fierce competition from jealous musicians, overcome family conflicts, endure the trials of love, and overcome his biggest rival - himself. Stylistically borrowing from the Western rock-u-drama and a homage to Prince’s 1984 “Purple Rain,” the story was written with and for a Tuareg audience, drawing from experiences of Mdou Moctar and fellow musicians. Carried by stunning musical performances from Mdou, the film is equally a window into modern day Tuareg guitar in the city of Agadez as it is an experiment in modern ethnographic film-making and new techniques of cross cultural collaboration.

Screening is FREE
Popcorn + refreshments will be available

Nasty Women Athens celebrates the diverse and inspiring voices within our community that are often overlooked.  Our definition of feminism is fluid, and we encourage artists and participants to think critically and recognize that different aspects of a woman's identity influence the discrimination she experiences. Ultimately, we hope to make local strides toward justice by uplifting artists and advocating for healthcare, choice, and equality

About The Nasty Women Project:
This is a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights and to be a platform for organization. Started by Roxanne Jackson and Jessamyn Fiore with the first Nasty Women exhibition in NYC in January 2017, the massive response has taken this call to arms into building an ever-expanding network of Nasty Women Artists & Art Organizers that has culminated in multiple exhibitions world-wide! See more venues at www.nastywomenexhibition.org

THIS EXHIBITION IS A FUNDRAISER!
Some of the works in this exhibition will be available for sale – 100% of the sale will go to the Feminist Women's Health Center (Atlanta, GA)

About The Feminist Women's Health Center:
At the Feminist Women's Health Center, we have two goals: to provide outstanding, sensitive, and supportive reproductive health care services to all at our Cliff Valley Clinic AND to empower our community through educational initiatives while advocating for reproductive justice and reproductive rights in our Community Education & Advocacy.

Pixel & Ink Grand Opening!

  • 766 West Broad Street Athens, GA, 30601 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As many of you know, Pixel & Ink has changed locations several times since opening 2 years ago. We have FINALLY found the perfect spot. We have spent the past several months renovating 766 W. Broad Street. Many of you may know it as the former home of the Secret Squirrel & The Money Machine. It needed some love, but Carolyn Crist, Laulea Taylor, Tony Ransom, Jim Wilson, Andrew Franklin Mansberger and Tatiana Veneruso have volunteered sooooo much of their time and energy to transform this dirty old building. We would love to invite you all to see the work and celebrate with us on Sunday, June 25, from 6:30-11.

The amazing Sr. Sol will cater a full taco bar, which will pair nicely with margs and beer.

We will present our brand new Trio Contemporary Art Gallery by showing original artwork from our many artists on Athens Art Prints and Athensartprints.com. There will be originals as well as prints for sale.

In one of our small galleries, we will show the work of Lucy K Ralston and Tomo Ralston. It is gorgeous and we are so happy to have them involved in our first event.

There will be music by: Four Eyes, The TaxiCab Verses, Hunger Anthem, and Tabloid

Please join us! We can't wait to show off all of our hard work!
