An evening of experimental music by 3 musicians who push their acoustic instruments way beyond normal expectations. Drums become choruses, strings become woodwinds and the human voice becomes an orchestra in the blink of an eye.

Sean Hamilton is a percussionist from Tampa, FL who blends virtuosic classical styles, free improvisation, electroacoustic music, new music, and experimental music to push the limits of the idea of "percussionist". His solo music can be heard on his album LOCI, and he has collaborated with artists such as VERB Ballets, New Orleans Airlift, Lindsey Kelley Dance, Death Posture, Eli Blasko, Tatsuya Nakatani, Jacqui Dugal, Mbulelo Ndabeni, and Claire Lefevre.

Klimchak lives at the intersection of chaos and order. His composer/percussionist side builds elaborate structures of interlocking melody & rhythm. Then his performer side takes over and obliterates those structures with bursts of noise, random drones and slabs of spontaneous improvised sound. Expect to see some combination of home built instruments, computerized sound design and a mess of drums, flutes and maybe a theremin.

Killick Hinds is an improvising guitarist, composer, and writer living in Athens, Georgia. He plays a variety of unusual stringed instruments with a comprehensive approach to genres known and as-yet-unlabeled.

English acoustic guitarist C Joynes, a resident of Cambridge, heavy thumb-led finger-picking technique that harks back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime, however, he uses this technique to explore alternative melodic traditions: the English folk-tune; North and West African music; elements of classical Indian music; proto-minimalist and impressionist musics from the European classical tradition. His approach to the recording and compositional process contains a subtle and unassuming experimentation, at times including collaged fragments, field recordings, processing, en-plein-air recordings, and cut-and-paste. (Rhodri Davies)

There are not too many guitar-players I respect without any reservation. Off the top of my head there’s Guitar Roberts, Bill Orcutt and Sir Richard Bishop. And C Joynes. Of the former, I’d say Joynes’s closest stylistic analogue is, for my money, that noble Knight of Araby. Not that licks are copped from that Flower of Chivalry and his unimpeachable companions, the dervishes of delirium. But Joynes does borrow from as many and varied traditions as the Sun City Girls, and like them he never descends into world music blanditudination, nor the faux-hokey archaisms of Arcadie. His technique, like Sir Richard’s, is a fuller’s earth that purifies all such dross and fills the ear with myrrh of the sweetest grade. Not many traffic in liquors this strong, so hitch that pony, pilgrim, and drink a while. (Bruce Russell)

Opening sets from local performers Killick Hinds and Michael Potter.

Trio is honored to present “Expunge”, a participatory, performative piece by Philadelphia based artist, Melissa Joseph. Joseph has two pieces in our upcoming exhibit, “Media Circus” and much of her work is focused on  violence and healing.

Artist Statement:

There has been a marked increase in the frequency and quantity of gun violence in schools in the last 10-15 years.  Since the mass shooting at Columbine in April of 1999, there have been 25 fatal elementary and high school shootings and counting.  My art practice is dedicated to mending and healing.  The goal of the work is to join people in conversation while exploring art’s role as mediator, or a locus of external focus required to generate more complex narratives and promote deeper understanding of the other.  There is not an intention of changing positions, but rather of allowing new knowledge to illuminate overlaps in personal experiences where trust and empathy might grow.

On April 28th,  I invite you to join me in a participatory project at Trio Contemporary Art Gallery called Expunge.  For 6 hours I will work, hand washing t-shirts that are screen printed with bullet holes.  There are 122* shirts, which is the number of people killed in mass shootings on school campuses in the United States since Columbine.  Each shirt symbolizes a victim lost to gun violence.

It is my hope that through this communal public act, opportunities will arise to meditate on the lives of these victims, to share in meaningful conversations and exchanges with one another, and to keep attention focused on the conversation around gun legislation.  Please come and wash a shirt with me!

ROVA Saxophone Quartet

About ROVA:

Think of the human voice in music. The most primal of instruments, it can melt you or move you to tears on the spot. Then it’s the saxophone, one-step removed from the human voice, and the next most powerful messenger in music. Johnny Hodges, Albert Ayler, Steve Lacy, Pharoah Sanders, Oliver Lake, King Curtis, Tim Berne, John Butcher - to name only a few of the many singular voices on the instrument who, with one short phrase or even one sound, can take your breath away, or excite and inspire you to great heights.

Multiply that power, that capability, times 4, and you have a saxophone quartet. ROVA Sax Quartet: a group that can move you the way an Eastern European choir of voices can move you, but also a group with force, a force that can feel as if it's tearing the walls of the listening space down, or that can simulate the complex sound of a machine, or one of nature’s wild phenomena, or conversely, the almost-silent overlapping sound patterns heard with eyes closed in a field in the wilderness.

ROVA Sax Quartet's musical goal has always been, since 1978, to instigate, to challenge, and to inspire. The group explores the synthesis of composition and collective improvisation, creating exciting, genre-bending music. ROVA:Arts, formed in 1986, acts as the umbrella organization for the musicians, facilitating the goals and productions and tours, the collaborations and special projects.

With a 40th anniversary on Feb 4, 2018, ROVA is one of the longest-standing groups in the music movement that has its roots in post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock, and 20th century new music; ROVA draws inspiration from the visual arts, contemporary poetry, contemporary dance. We listen closely and deeply appreciate both the traditional and the pop music styles of Africa and Asia. And then there is the blues; always a key.

Screening: Bad Girl Dracula + More!

  • 766 West Broad Street Athens, GA, 30601 United States (map)

Trio Contemporary Art Gallery will present a special 3D screening of “Bad Girl Dracula,” the latest movie by long-running Athens underground film collective Gonzoriffic, on Saturday, December 9th, 2017 at 8pm. “The Werewolf Turned into a Person” and “Dr. Humpinstein’s Erotik Castle” will also be shown, followed by an informal Q&A with the filmmakers.

Filmed in September 2017 at Trio Gallery, “Bad Girl Dracula” is a camped up interpretation of ‘70s lesbian vampire movies by Jess Franco, with a primary cast that includes Dee Flowered and Tittiana Sprinkles of the Athens burlesque troupe Effie’s Club Follies and Atlanta visual artist and performer Thio Rose.

“The Werewolf Turned into a Person” left viewers stunned at last month’s Gonzoriffic Underground Movie Show at Ciné. The bizarre short stars Dee Flowered and Addison Nikki and incorporates dialogue taken from real conversations with director Andrew Shearer’s 4 year old child as well as some unique GoPro footage shot outside Atlanta’s Monsterama convention.

“Dr. Humpinstein’s Erotik Castle” is a feminist take on the B movie styles of Ed Wood and Russ Meyer, using the structure of the cult classic “Orgy of the Dead” to make a statement about body positivity. It was made in and around Athens in 2011 and features an old school girl gang rumble filmed at the concrete plant outside the Chase Street warehouses.

The program runs 60 minutes and is unrated. A $5 donation is suggested.

About Gonzoriffic:

Comprised of local artists, performers, musicians, and theatre actors, Gonzoriffic has produced over 100 short films and features in and around the Athens area since 2003 with a mission of creating empowering and audacious portrayals of women on screen. Their first official premiere was a midnight screening of their dark comedy “PsychoVixens” at the 40 Watt Club during Athfest 2004, and they have worked exclusively with Athens Cine since 2008 to produce showcases of their films every October. Several of their shorts and features are available through Amazon Video Direct and Amazon Prime streaming services.

Tatsuya Nakatani w/ special guest Grant Evans

November 25th 7-9PM $10 suggested donation, Refreshments provided.

Trio Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to be hosting an evening of lecture and performance with Tatsuya Nakatani (w/ special guest Grant Evans). Nakatani is a Japanese avant garde percussionist and acoustic sound artist. Based in the United States, he has released over 80 recordings in the last two decades and tours extensively.

Nakatani has developed his own unique instrumentation, creating new sounds and extended techniques. Utilizing gongs, drums, cymbals, singing bowls, his breath, wooden sticks, metal objects, and the idiosyncratic bows and mallets he handcrafts in his workshop; he sculpts an intense, intuitively primitive, expressive sound form that defies genre. His work engages improvised-experimental music and movement, while still retaining the traditional sense of space, depth and deep time found in Japanese art.

The Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) is a mobile community engagement project he has developed and grown over the last decade. Nakatani organizes and conducts local ensembles in performances of his complex harmonic compositions on 15 bowed gongs. These works are site specific by nature, taking place in abandoned grain silos, viaducts and other unique architectural spaces as well as in traditional concert halls and galleries.

Nakatani teaches master classes and workshops at universities, giving students an opportunity to share his unique approach and philosophy for creating visceral, non-linear, experiential sounds.

Grant Evans is an audio/visual artist working primarily with electronics, acoustic instruments, field recordings, and magnetic tape.

"... I would characterize the sounds Grant Evans generates as being closer to mud and muck as far as tactile metaphors go. It is sticky, gritty, and at times ugly sounding, but that is exactly what makes it compelling. I have no idea how he made these sounds, since almost nothing is identifiable, but I am rather glad that he did." - brainwashed.com

Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai
“Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it”
Directed by Christopher Kirkley
In collaboration with Mdou Moctar and Jerome Fino

A revolutionary story of one musicians struggle to make it, against all odds, in the winner takes all Tuareg guitar scene of Niger.

THEN see Mdou Moctar LIVE! on The Rooftop at Georgia Theatre!
https://www.facebook.com/events/424323821298366/

FILM SYNOPSIS:
Akounak tells the universal story of a musician trying to make it against all odds, set against the backdrop of the raucous subculture of Tuareg guitar. The protagonist, real life musician Mdou Moctar, must battle fierce competition from jealous musicians, overcome family conflicts, endure the trials of love, and overcome his biggest rival - himself. Stylistically borrowing from the Western rock-u-drama and a homage to Prince’s 1984 “Purple Rain,” the story was written with and for a Tuareg audience, drawing from experiences of Mdou Moctar and fellow musicians. Carried by stunning musical performances from Mdou, the film is equally a window into modern day Tuareg guitar in the city of Agadez as it is an experiment in modern ethnographic film-making and new techniques of cross cultural collaboration.

Screening is FREE

Join us for the premiere screening of the new Gonzoriffic feature film Space Boobs In Space! 8PM, suggested donation $5

Long-running Athens underground film collective Gonzoriffic will premiere their new feature-length film “Space Boobs In Space” at the Trio Contemporary Art Gallery on Friday, August 18th, 2017 at 8pm.

Shot over a two-year period in Athens and Atlanta, the movie features several members of Effie’s Club Follies, local legends Ming Vase Dynasty and Katherine English, and Atlanta burlesque superstar Lola LeSoleil, and many more awesome faces.

Presented as a recovered transmission from the deep, deep cleavage of the galaxy, “Space Boobs In Space” expands on one of the short films in Gonzoriffic’s 2013 “Pajama Nightmare” compilation to include more aliens, bigger blasters, and lower necklines in addition to sexy ghosts, fashion forward swamp monsters, a vampire girl gang, farting serial killers, and cinema’s first cheesecake shower.

“Space Boobs In Space” runs 95 minutes and is unrated. A $5 donation is suggested. The program will include an introduction by the filmmakers and informal Q&A following the movie.

About Gonzoriffic

Comprised of local artists, performers, musicians, and theatre actors, Gonzoriffic has produced over 100 short films and features in and around the Athens area since 2003 with a mission of creating empowering and audacious portrayals of women on screen. Their first official premiere was a midnight screening of their dark comedy “PsychoVixens” at the 40 Watt Club during Athfest 2004, and they have worked exclusively with Athens Cine since 2008 to produce showcases of their films every October. Several of their shorts and features are available through Amazon Video Direct and Amazon Prime streaming services.

Nasty Women Athens celebrates the diverse and inspiring voices within our community that are often overlooked.  Our definition of feminism is fluid, and we encourage artists and participants to think critically and recognize that different aspects of a woman's identity influence the discrimination she experiences. Ultimately, we hope to make local strides toward justice by uplifting artists and advocating for healthcare, choice, and equality

About The Nasty Women Project:
This is a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights and to be a platform for organization. Started by Roxanne Jackson and Jessamyn Fiore with the first Nasty Women exhibition in NYC in January 2017, the massive response has taken this call to arms into building an ever-expanding network of Nasty Women Artists & Art Organizers that has culminated in multiple exhibitions world-wide! See more venues at www.nastywomenexhibition.org

More events TBA!

THIS EXHIBITION IS A FUNDRAISER!
Some of the works in this exhibition will be available for sale – 100% of the sale will go to the Feminist Women's Health Center (Atlanta, GA)

About The Feminist Women's Health Center:
At the Feminist Women's Health Center, we have two goals: to provide outstanding, sensitive, and supportive reproductive health care services to all at our Cliff Valley Clinic AND to empower our community through educational initiatives while advocating for reproductive justice and reproductive rights in our Community Education & Advocacy.

Pixel & Ink Grand Opening!

  • 766 West Broad Street Athens, GA, 30601 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As many of you know, Pixel & Ink has changed locations several times since opening 2 years ago. We have FINALLY found the perfect spot. We have spent the past several months renovating 766 W. Broad Street. Many of you may know it as the former home of the Secret Squirrel & The Money Machine. It needed some love, but Carolyn Crist, Laulea Taylor, Tony Ransom, Jim Wilson, Andrew Franklin Mansberger and Tatiana Veneruso have volunteered sooooo much of their time and energy to transform this dirty old building. We would love to invite you all to see the work and celebrate with us on Sunday, June 25, from 6:30-11.

The amazing Sr. Sol will cater a full taco bar, which will pair nicely with margs and beer.

We will present our brand new Trio Contemporary Art Gallery by showing original artwork from our many artists on Athens Art Prints and Athensartprints.com. There will be originals as well as prints for sale.

In one of our small galleries, we will show the work of Lucy K Ralston and Tomo Ralston. It is gorgeous and we are so happy to have them involved in our first event.

There will be music by: Four Eyes, The TaxiCab Verses, Hunger Anthem, and Tabloid

Please join us! We can't wait to show off all of our hard work!
